Stephen Smith (Of Counsel, Washington, DC)

As a former Associate Regional Counsel for EPA Region 4’s Office of Regional Counsel, Stephen brings more than 12 years of government experience to B&D. At EPA, Stephen led all legal aspects of complex environmental cleanups, enforcement actions, and emergency responses throughout the Southeast. He served as lead counsel for hundreds of matters related to nearly all major environmental statutes, including the Comprehensive Response, Compensation and Liability Act (Superfund), Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Oil Pollution Act, among others. He now uses this experience and knowledge to navigate complex environmental issues facing his clients. In his short time, he has already provided tremendous value strategically navigating complexities for his clients related to emergency spills, Superfund sites, and water- and waste-related enforcement and compliance issues.

Lia Crutchfield (Associate, Boston)

Lia uses her passion for environmental and land use law to counsel clients on regulatory and litigation matters. She joined B&D after working as a law clerk at the Superior Court of the State of Connecticut. As a clerk, Lia assisted numerous judges throughout Connecticut in drafting preliminary Superior Court decisions pertaining to employment, housing, contract, family, and insurance law. She also worked on research projects for numerous judges and authored bench memorandums analyzing various legal issues presented at trial by all parties. While pursuing her J.D., Lia held various internships for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, several law firms, and a title insurance brokerage firm.

Cymone Gosnell (Associate, Baltimore)

Cymone focuses her practice on litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters. Before joining B&D, she worked as an associate at a local Baltimore firm where she served as lead counsel on challenging commercial real estate acquisitions across the country, including handling complex environmental issues related to oil wells, RCRA compliance, and assisting with environmental assessments. She also has experience preparing financing documents for several types of transactions, such as revolving loans for renewable energy projects, traditional financing, large commercial real estate sales, and affordable housing refinancings. Cymone is passionate about environmental justice and spent her time in the Environmental Law Clinic at the Francis King Carey School of Law preparing a climate change manual for environmental justice communities.

Sharon Mathew (Law Clerk, San Francisco)

Sharon helps clients navigate issues relating to air, climate change, and environmental justice. She joined B&D after receiving her LL.M. from Stanford University. She is particularly interested in international regulations for products compliance and in providing counsel on air issues with a focus on mobile source emissions in California and at the federal level. Sharon has experience navigating Indian domestic environmental policies, including the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the Air Act, 1981, and international climate change agreements such as the Paris Agreement. At Stanford, she was a Member Editor of the Stanford Environmental Law Journal, a member of the Environmental Law Pro Bono Project, and a research assistant with the Stanford Sustainable Finance Initiative.
