Gus Winkes Recognized in Bloomberg Law's "They've Got Next"
Bloomberg Law featured B&D’s Gus Winkes (Seattle, WA) in "They’ve Got Next: Five Fresh Faces to Know in Environmental Law."
Along with other attorneys under the age of 40 who are leading in the field of environmental law, Gus discussed his background and his experience practicing as an environmental lawyer. The profile highlights Gus’ experience with Superfund sites – a focus of his practice – which he characterizes as "three-dimensional chess."
“The field is dynamic and changing, and it’s a reason why we all continue to come to work,” he commented. One example was a 2015 court proceeding in which Gus was part of a team that helped a client to challenge a proposed settlement between the Environmental Protection Agency and a potentially responsible party at the Portland Harbor Superfund site. Gus and the team developed arguments that highlighted critical flaws with the proposed settlement, ultimately leading to a settlement that was more favorable to the client.
Recently, in addition to client work, Gus has also pursued opportunities to improve contaminated site cleanups through participation in an advisory group to the Washington State Department of Ecology. Gus observed, “It’s always important to be looking for opportunities to get out in the broader community,” he said. “Think about where your skills, expertise, and interests can make a difference.”
In the article, David Weber, B&D’s Seattle Managing Principal, added that Gus is “laser focused on addressing the needs” of his clients and is “a superb legal strategist.”
