B&D Hosting Webinar on CWA Legal Challenges and Liability Reduction Strategies

Beveridge & Diamond will host a webinar on May 31 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm (PDT). Associate Erika Spanton (Seattle) will speak in a presentation titled "Getting Pacific Northwest Aquaculture Out of Deep Water: Clean Water Act Legal Challenges and Liability Reduction Strategies."

The webinar will take a closer look at the current Clean Water Act (CWA) legal challenges, discuss the outlook for finfish and shellfish growers in the Pacific Northwest, and map out strategies for reducing liability to ensure aquaculture remains a robust—yet responsible—Pacific Northwest industry. A recent boom of citizen action suits under CWA has brought Pacific Northwest shellfish and finfish aquaculture into sharp focus and created legal uncertainty for aquaculture operators. Even more lawsuits are unfolding. Aquaculture holds significant economic and ecological benefits for the Pacific Northwest, but it also poses significant risks, as evidenced by Cooke Aquaculture’s Atlantic salmon net pen collapse last summer in which an estimated 243,000 to 263,000 non-native fish were released into the wild.
