Russ LaMotte Speaking on Association of Corporate Counsel Asia-Pacific Interest Group Webcast about New Product and Waste Related Rules in India
Russ LaMotte, a principal in Beveridge & Diamond's Washington, DC office, will participate in a webcast presented by the American Corporate Counsel (ACC) entitled "APAC: Dealing With Expanding Product and Waste Requirements in Asia: The India Example." This webcast will present an overview of the three product- and waste-related environmental rules India recently introduced and how requirements like these are expanding throughout Asia. India, for example, has released three significant new environmental rules affecting products and wastes:
- An overhaul of their E-Waste Rule, which provides a number of market-access requirements for electronics and IT equipment.
- An overhaul of their Hazardous Waste Rule, which dramatically changes their classification criteria for defining a “waste,” determining when a waste is hazardous, and setting rules for the import and export of used equipment intended for repair, refurbishment and reuse (providing significant opportunities for protectionist measures disguised as environmental requirements).
- An overhaul of their Plastics Waste Rule, which, depending on how it is implemented, could set new and challenging compliance requirements for any company that imports a product that is packaged in plastic upon import, as well as for the use of plastic in manufacturing and distribution operations in India.
