In its 2023 edition of the Pro Bono Spotlight, Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly named Associate Michael Campinell (Boston) to its publication, highlighting law firms and attorneys who devote significant time to pro bono work while maintaining the full load of their normal practices. Earlier this year, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court named him and several other Boston B&D lawyers to its 2023 Pro Bono Honor Roll.

In his interview, Mike said, “Pro bono work is a great way to give back to our communities and help people and organizations successfully navigate the legal system in their times of need. Helping a pro bono client through a difficult, and often personal, situation is a very rewarding experience.”

Highlights of Mike’s pro bono practice over the past year include helping a translator for the U.S. military apply for asylum after he fled Afghanistan when the Taliban took over. The translator was granted asylum and is now working to bring his wife and children to the U.S. Mike is also developing an environmental mock trial program, along with Principal Eric Klein and Associates Lauren Karam and Emma Dismukes, in partnership with Boston public schools. The program teaches students about environmental issues including climate change and environmental justice, and what being a lawyer means — advocating for others, thinking strategically and critically about complicated situations, and working with a team towards a common goal.

Pro Bono work is a top priority at B&D. Over half of all B&D attorneys, both principals and associates, participate in the firm’s pro bono efforts. The firm undertakes a variety of pro bono work, such as amicus briefs on racial justice and the rule of law, immigration and refugee support, landlord-tenant issues, and criminal clemency cases.
